THE FRANCO-JAPANESE COLLABORATION OF ROCHE BOBOIS AND KENZO TAKADA
Roche Bobois has been present in South Africa since 2015. Since then, the brand has been spreading the ‘French Art de vivre’ all over the country. With two showrooms, one in Cape Town and another in Johannesburg since August 2017, Roche Bobois presents new collections twice a year and, of course, their iconic models as the Mah Jong sofa too.
Through the years, the iconic model imposed itself as a reference in terms of creativity and design. Indeed, Roche Bobois keeps proposing new versions of the sofa thanks to various collaborations with prestigious designers. The Mah Jong has been “dressed” by Missoni Home and Jean-Paul Gaultier for instance. Every Designers has brought their own touch to the sofa. As an example, Jean-Paul Gaultier proposed a personal interpretation of the Mah Jong by designing it like his well-known “marinière”.
This season, it’s Kenzo Takada’s turn to propose a brand-knew version of the sofa. Named ‘Nogaku’, the collection is inspired by Takada’s Japanese roots. He was born in Japan and has been passionate by fashion very early. He joined the prestigious Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College at 19. After visiting France for 6 months, he decided to settle there and he never leaved Paris. Where he became the more Parisian of the Japanese designers.
Nowadays, at 78 years old, Takada decided to focus on design and interior decoration again. However, we can still recognize his unique style. This is one of the reasons why Roche Bobois gave carte blanche to him. For his collection, Kenzo Takada was inspired by the Noh theatre. By taking his inspiration from the actor’s traditional kimonos and mixing it with occidental influence, he designed a collection of furniture and accessories.
Kenzo Takada created 3 versions of the Mah Jong : the “Asa” (morning) with pastel colours, the “Hiru” (midday) with vivid colours and the the “Yoru” (evening) with various shades of blue and green. Kenzo also designed cushions, ottoman, rugs and vases in the same inspiration for Roche Bobois. Come and discover them in their showrooms.
